The project is embedded in the German government's H2Mare theme and will investigate the production of hydrogen directly at sea. Wind turbines at sea generate significantly more and more regular electricity than their onshore counterparts (source: PTJ). The aim of the individual project ("UAP 3.1 Use of offshore H2 in coastal shipping "OH22KuesSe") is to find potentially favorable use cases of a direct hydrogen supply for ships.
From today's perspective, not all routes and ships seem suitable for this energy carrier. In this respect, an inventory of seagoing vessels will be recorded and classified. For the most suitable class, a supply concept (shore-side and ship-side) will be drawn up. In the process, the rules defined by classification societies, which are currently developing and which must be observed in design and operation, will be identified.
First results of the project (as of 07/02/2024):
- suitable routes have been named, suitable ships selected
- planned hydrogen valve measuring station has been set up and equipped with measuring gases
- test engine on commissioned test rig has already run on hydrogen for the first time
