Getting here

… by train/city train

As a rail passenger coming from all directions you have to aim for  Rostock Hauptbahnhof (Rostock Central Station). From there directly you can take the S-Bahn (city train) towards Warnemünde until Haltepunkt Warnemünde-Werft. Now you have only 3 Minutes footpath ahead of you until you reach the Department of Maritime Studies.

In case you are planning to visit Warnemünde itself, the cruiseship terminal or the beach, you have the possibility to either leave the S-Bahn (city train) at the end station or to go by different bus routes leaving at the bus stop which is located directly next to Haltepunkt Warnemünde-Werft. To go back to Rostock Hauptbahnhof (Rostock Central Station) you can also enter the S-Bahn (city train) and the end station “Warnemünde”.

... by car

Coming from southerly direction you follow the A19 (E55) until you reach the interchange Rostock-Süd. (Alternatively you can drive up the A19 until the end, then you have to use the tunnel, which is charge tolled, to continue your journey on the urban motorway (Stadtautobahn B103) towards Warnemünde)

Proceed on the A 20 (E22) towards Lübeck until highway exit Rostock-West Richtung Warnemünde.

Proceed on the B103 (feeder road, residents refer to it as “Stadtautobahn” (urban highway)) towards Warnemünde.

Coming from westerly and easterly direction (f.e. coming from Hamburg) you take the A20 (E22) until highway exit Rostock-West Richtung Warnemünde. Continue as mentioned above.

Parking recommendation:

First parking area is behind the district name sign (entrance behind the car dealer). From there it takes just 2 minutes footpath to the Department of Maritime Studies. If you want to connect your visit at the Department of Maritime Studies with a side trip to the beach or to inner Warnemünde, you can reach your targets from this parking area by different busses or walk the short distance.

… by plane

From Airport Rostock-Laage busses and shuttles are operating directly to Rostock Central Station. At all other airports you can directly enter trains going to Rostock Central Station.

... by ferry

In little bit less than two hours of time Rostock seaport is accessible from Gedser at the southern tip of Denmark by ferries run by Scandlines in a 2-hour-rhythm.
From swedish Trelleborg it takes 6 hours to reach Rostock by ferries run by Scandlines and TT-Lines.

Housing & accomodation

Housing

There are two very inexpensive options for housing in Rostock and Warnemünde: residential homes and shared apartments.

Residential homes

Studentenwerk Rostock (Student Services Rostock) offers furnished rooms in several modernly furnished residential homes in Wismar. There, you share kitchen and bathroom facilities with other students. These rooms have a one-semester rent contract. For many international students, this is the first and easiest choice. You can make arrangements prior to your arrival. Simply contact the Studentenwerk Rostock.

Shared apartments – Wohngemeinschaften (WGs)

Often students share a flat and form a so-called Wohngemeinschaft, or WG (shared apartments). The rent for each flatmate is very reasonable. On several webpages you can find offers for available rooms (also furnished). If you are not able to arrange for housing until after your arrival, the staff of the International Office will be glad to assist you. Monthly rent in a WG can range from 170 to 230 euros. Sometimes extra fees are charged for electricity, heating, etc. Make sure to ask about these in advance.

Accomodation for conferences and Information days

Rostock/Warnemünde cater to the needs of holidaymakers, day trippers and people on business trips alike. Depending on your budget and the degree of comfort you require, there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from.

Youth hostels and other hostels are popular among younger travellers. In a large number of guest houses, the owners attach great importance to looking after their guests with a warm, personal touch. The range of accommodation available is completed by hotels of all categories. It is definitely advisable to make reservations in good time in the peak season, as well as at Easter, Whitsun or during the Christmas holidays.

Recreation & sport

We are a certified partner university of top-level sport. In this capacity, we offer the necessary basic conditions in order to successfully combine a course of study with professional sport.

Those who would rather just let of some steam in a more casual manner after a day of study will find a wide range of sports courses. Students at the Rostock-Warnemünde site can also make use of the sports facilities at Rostock University.

And, last but by no means least: Wind and waves just a stone’s throw away.
