In the "mFund" research programme of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV), the Departement of Maritime Studies, Systems Engineering and Logistics also successfully applied for funding with its project proposal "Expert system as an assistant for manned and autonomous shipping". Since November 2024, the researchers of the Institute for Innovative Ship Simulation and Maritime Systems (ISSIMS) have been researching the development of a nautical expert system as part of a consortium. The consortium is led by the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW). The expert system is intended to support watch officers on board conventional, manned ships as well as operators of future unmanned, remote-controlled ships or personnel in shore-based monitoring centres. At its core, the system will utilise currently available current and weather data to improve the prediction of process or situation conditions.
